slea head drive; driving the dingle peninsula

slea head drive; driving the dingle peninsula

there are multiple scenic drives in ireland. in fact almost every drive we took during our 10 day ireland road trip was scenic to us! there are however three drives known for their scenery. the atlantic way follows the ireland coast all the way around the country. the ring of kerry loops around county kerry starting in killarney. the slea head drive is the shortest of the three and loops around the dingle peninsula.

we decided to take slea head drive to avoid some of the tourist traffic that is present on the other paths. i would recommend giving yourself about half a day to enjoy this drive and all the sights. the roads are narrow and winding on the cliffs so be sure to take your time and enjoy the sights!

dingle

slea head drive starts and ends in dingle ireland. dingle is a cute little seaside town with shops and restaurants just blocks off the coast. this is a fishing town and that is evident in the seafood restaurants present. dingle also has murphys ice cream which is made exclusively from kerry cows. there are not many kerry cows left and they are found almost exclusively in county kerry.

this ice cream has some great and unique flavors. we even stopped and ate it twice during our trip!

slea head drive

we spent the day driving from doolin on the slea head drive and over to killarney. this drive was beautiful and we stopped a lot for pictures! we even had to stop once for some cow herding.

we came across bee hive huts on our drives and stopped to explore for a bit. we saw some animals and my mom had to stop to photograph them.

the coast was beautiful and violent. we even stopped on inch beach and saw some people much braver than me kite boarding. it was windy and cold out so we didn’t brave the water, but the kite boarders were enjoying it.
